THE HOPE OF EARTH

Precious name, oh how sweet the name of Jesus. He is the hope of earth and the joy of heaven. So the lyrics of this song kept on reverberating in my spirit until I was inspired to write on the subject of “Jesus: the hope of earth.” For many years, hope has been an element in the lives of people that has given them a certain edge and tenacity for life. We all believe things will get better. We all have hope that everything will be alright. We all believe that the future is always bright and glorious. That is the hope that grounds our living.

But for the Christian, I like to ask, what is our hope in this world? What do we live for? This is a great query that requires some meditation before answering. But in the book of Ephesians 1:17–18, the Bible makes a profound statement, “…that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints…”

From the scripture above, we can establish the fact that in Christianity, we have what we call the hope of our calling. And this hope of our calling is what inspires and drive our walk here on earth. But in fact the hope of our calling, is actually a person — he is our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Jesus is the hope of earth. He is all that we have. He is the reason we live, move and exist. He is our purpose, our destiny, our goal. To be just like him. I cannot imagine a better life here on earth without Jesus. He is our all and in all.

Day in day out we see the extent of evil and the corruption which started from the garden of Eden, annihilating the beauty of God’s creation. The law of sin and death has corrupted the current earth and it seems there is no hope for life any longer. But I tell you a mystery, there is hope for this life. And this hope is only found in Christ. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

The whole earth is condemned and destined to deteriorate due to the divine sentence — the sins of Adam and Eve. The only hope man has on this earth is to believe in Jesus, the only begotten son of God. Without him, life is hopeless. So today, for all reading this piece, Jesus Christ is calling. He is calling you today. Jesus Christ is beseeching; he is stretching his arm as you pray. For he is the way, the truth, the life and the hope of earth. He is the beginning and the ending. He is the one who saves all humanity. He is the hope of this condemned earth. And he keeps on calling. Come to him now. For in him is purposeful living, in him is hope for this life.
